History of the West End Lions Club: The Louisville West End Lions Club was activated and granted its charter on May 16, 1975 by the International Association of Lions Clubs under the sponsorship of the Louisville Breakfast Club. The officers were: Lion Owen Krigger, President; Lion John Burton, 1st Vice-President; Lion Kenneth Ramsey, 2nd Vice-President; Lion Leroy Ray 3rd Vice President and Treasurer; Lion Joe Bradford as Secretary. The West End Club was organized to be a service organization for the west end of Louisville. The objectives were to work with people who need eye care/glasses, senior citizens, the handicapped, the youth and other less fortunate people. The West End Lions Club is not a welfare agency. The club can not help everyone who request help. The members try to aid or assist wherever the occasion warrants, at the discretion of the club. The Lions seek financial help and support from wherever possible, to aid in their efforts because the club does not receive any local, state or federal grants from which to work. The club raises money by having projects such as: boat excursions, Las Vegas type Monte Carlos, fish fries, dances, raffles etc.. All proceeds raised are returned to the community. The West End Lions have spent thousands of dollars on eye exams and eye glasses. The club donates to various help agencies and families experiencing tragedy. The club sponsors clinics for health services such as blood-mobile, blood pressure, diabetes clinics, drug awareness clinics, glaucoma clinics and donates to the Lion Community Center with physical help as well as monetary help. The club has spent thousands of dollars for Christmas food baskets and certificates for the needy. The club also makes monetary contributions to the Blind Youth Camp, Trooper Island, The Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Basketball game, Candy Day, just to name a few. The ladies Auxiliary worked with the Lions until several members wanted to become Lioness. They helped organize the West End Lioness Club, as a sister club to the West End Lions. The Lioness Club is for all females and works independently from the Lions Club, although the West End Lions Club is the sponsoring club for the Lioness. Their activites etc. should be coordinated through the Lions Club. The Lions Community Center was established as a project for the area residents, with efforts to make it independent of the Lions Club and to provide a meeting place for the Lions and other organizations eg. Alcoholics Anonymous, Senior Citizens, Weddings and Class Reunions. The Louisville West End Lions Club does not impose any limitations or discriminate based on age, race, color, religion, sex, or natural origin.------------------Congratulations: Lion James for being promoted to SGT with the Louisville Metro Fire Department-----------and Lion Pat for receiving her degree and for be named Brown Mackey College "Student of the Year"-------------------Remember the Westend Lions Club Christmas Party is on the 21st of December.
